Located about fifty miles north of Missoula, Montana is the 18,766-acre Bison Range (formerly the National Bison Range). In 1908, the federal government established the National Bison Range as a National Wildlife Refuge in the middle of the Flathead Indian Reservation. In December of 2020, Congress restored the Bison Range to federal trust ownership for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, restoring the land and the buffalo herd to tribal management.
Between 350-500 bison roam the bunchgrass prairie, along with many other species including, mule deer, elk, white-tailed deer, cougar, black bear, coyote, bighorn sheep, and smaller mammals. Over 200 species of birds have been identified in the Bison Range.
