I was fortunate enough to get an advance copy of Muskrat Hill by award-winning author, Easy Jackson (a.k.a. Vicky Rose). The book is being published by Five Star Publishing and will be released in February of 2020.
Near the turn of the twentieth century, two young boys, Kit Robertson and his friend Whitey from the little Texas town of Muskrat Hill, stumble upon the mutilated body of a young woman. The boys rush to town to alert the town Marshal, a half-breed Comanche by the name of Asa Jenkins, who enlists the help of “Pop” Robertson, Kit’s father, to help solve the murder. Pop had been a famous and well respected Texas Ranger in his younger days. Now, as an aging storekeeper, will he be up to the task?
As more grisly murders take place, Pop and Asa work overtime to try to find clues to the killer’s identity and put the pieces of the puzzle together. But there are more questions than answers, and we soon discover that the quiet, unpretentious, little town of Muskrat Hill is bursting at the seams with secrets of its own and more suspects than Pop and Asa know what to do with.
Easy Jackson has given us a “who-done-it” that will keep the reader’s fingers flipping page after page with no desire to stop. I can easily see people reading this book from cover to cover in one sitting—it’s that good! She has created for us the kind of characters that other writers envy—warts and all, from grown men who aren’t afraid to cry, too young boys who display wisdom and courage beyond their years.
In a really good book, you’ll discover characters that you want more of than the book allows, and Pop Robertson is one of those characters. I hope the author has more of his stories and experiences to share with us.
